Yes I'm shocked!!!
This is the period of the year where I start to plan the next sailing season and
i PANERAI
events (yes because was clear for everyone what do you mean, like Kleenex©, Scotch©) were already shifted in my calendar just changing the year when the event was closed. The iCal of my agenda is called PANERAI, now it will be renamed with an anonymous Classic.
Why I'm shocked? because, if you like a metaphor
the PANERAI is the Sunday family lunch and the ROLEX sailing events are the Friday night dinner in the disco with friends, you dress a jacket in both but with different taste.
With the J24 class, the PANERAI have moved me to become a Freelance Pro Photographer, leaving the level of Amateurs.
Some signs of the wind of change were already in the air, like when last years they decided to sponsor the America's Cup, or this year the lacking of a big fleet floating device (a.k.a.: R.I.B., press boat), or like the missing of some protagonist (Sailors and Yachts), but they were just evidence of the world and sailing situation (mostly d/t economic).
Even if ISAF (n.d.a.: I refuse to use the name World Sailing) never had considered it as a Main Event (after all they, ISAF, have kicked out the Star Class), PANERAI (and ROLEX, and all Ocean Classes) has organized, built, showed a system that works to promote the Sailing Sport that moves thousand of people: THE CIRCUS OF SAILING, like the Formula 1 Circus.
Now some Questions are:
  • Will the series survive? Absolutely I don't know. 2019Aug update: 2019 is a transition and looks very bad for now;
  • Will the series find a replacement? Maybe Omega or Patek Philippe, Rolex will have a Monopolio (difficult: already last year some rumours says a cut of money); or Some Car manufacturers like Mercedes (it's the only one not involved in sailing). 2019Aug update: no signal;
  • Will the club have the force to continue to do the events? Well in theory yes, because the regattas were already managed by the clubs host; 2019Aug update: no economical information for now. Events: Antibes had done! Argentario had done! Imperia? for now 40 boats; Cannes? for now has +60 boats plus dragon and 5.5mJ. We will see next year;
  • Will the club keep the standards? For the water part yes, for the docks life maybe not. 2019Aug update: Antibes: yes as I expected; Cannes? we will see;
  • Will the owners create a company (society-association) to manage a new series? It can be a good idea, in someway like in Formula One today, also it would eliminate the dependence from the sponsor name (see what is happening with the ex Volvo Ocean Race). 2019Aug update: for Now NO, very pity, hopes next year.

I'm closing now this mix of sensazioni, hoping that the future will open new opportunity,
like Motorsport needs the Mille Miglia, so Sailing needs a new Classic Series
I leave you here finally enjoy some pictures below and introduced by some words about my experience del PANERAI

2013

Antibes

My first regatta of the PANERAI was 2013, Les Voiles d'Antibes and I shot it from the stones of the I.Y.C. of Antibes (now it's impossible d/t anti-terrorism actions).

I jumped all 2014 because I was part of many teams as sailor and the official shooter for two Italian Championship (J24 and Fun Class) and the ORC Championship (Campionato Velico del Lario a.k.a. lago di Como).

In 2015 I was able to be there, and I started my friendship with some great shooters like Cyril, James, Patrick, Jef, and at the end with the PANERAI official shooting team: Guido, Mauro e Carlo. The main maker for this is Yann that manage all of us to get a place in the press boat.
Also one of the feature I always loved
del PANERAI
in particular at the L.V.A. event, is the Sailing spirit for Sailors, here is only for if you like/understand/do sailing. So I could/can speak with crews, in particular with friends like Mauro al Quadrato (a.k.a. Mauro and Mauro), Federico, Umberto... and all those who followed, Eugenia, Christian...

Here Cyril has pushed me to join the circus again that year, in Cannes at the Régates Royales. Another world!

More boat, more wind, more glamour, more challenges.
The contact with this event passed via the French contact to the Italian contact. Le Signore del Press Office: Carla e Soazig. GRAZIE PER TUTTO
Probably it has been the best debut, a crash at the start, the fantastic lady called Shamrock V, yes I've totally fallen in love of J-Class, the field. The regatta has one of the best feature we, shooters, love the background, the bay with castle and rocks is just awesome.
A feature I love of the R.R. (n.d.a.: not Rolls Royce) is the possibility to shoot from one design Dragon Class to the most beautiful classes J-Class and 15mR. Another feature, is the glamour presence from Danish Royal family to V.I.P. like Simon Le Bon and the Mercedes boss Dieter Zetsche, or in a sad day of the 2017 when the patron of Playboy died, I decided to focus my attention to all women crews.

About glamour, one personal note:
this year, 2016, I met a shooter, and 12 month later and 80[km] aways from Cannes (St. Tropez) we have fallen in love and we have started our relationship...
... Anche questo è PANERAI
