Friday with the first day of the Primo Cup and the traditional “ICErace” on the lake two weeks ago, the “mediterranean” sailing season has started!
Despite February, on the lake the first race of the XV Zona FIV hosted on by the CVT, had a good numbers of participants with 86 athletes divided for ILCA4, 6 and 7. In particular these last two, it’s a scandal that only 4 were in the ILCA7, while on the old radial ILCA6, there was 13 Master and 40 men with just 3 ladies! The old boy claimed they are not fit for the big Sail: Mammolette!!!
In particular considering the weather that was as cold spring and with very light wind.
However I can anticipate the 4, with big fabric, had made a beautiful fight to win! While on the ILCA4 a great exploit from our local lady that has managed to great a big gap from the fleet for the joy of her instructor (and all club).
The morning on the lake the wind had been very difficult and, as usual, a general recall and the needs of the Black Flag has been displaced to calm down the sailors. This had generated a big delay and the Tivano had gone! In the afternoon the Breva had arrived bringing the smog from the valley a bit late and just one race had been done for the 2 fleets.
Meanwhile on the sea, Thursday the YCM had been obliged to delete the practice race for the excess of energy of the wind and waves.

Friday the wind was around 17-20kts and some gust above, but the big “concerns” for the sailors, and all humans on the sea, has been the Wave: choppy, big, shorter than normal on average a rhythm of two waves of 1.5-2m within -10sec, but on the east field the interaction with Cap Martin has made the life quite tricky in particular for us on the press boat, like sometime you will have a straight wall of water on your side, or more dangerously a big sparking +2m wave that want hug your stern and clean the deck. The wind on the western field, in front of the Museum, has been more stable, with a small advantage on right tack, but later on the second lap the sea waves condition has taken the priority and all have decided to go upwind on left tack.
On this last field the big fleet of J70 has a good tough day, one boat had a M.O.B, man over board, and has been recovered by his boat, luckily because we didn’t see the sailor, and he was in the middle of the field.
On the other field we have the “local” fleet of Smeralda 888, where we record the crew of Canard à l’Orange has broken the boom and a jib and… no-one has been injured!
The cape31 had disappointed all the fans like me, there are only 2!!! boats on the water. The club, very kindly, has made them race anyway, but this is a big signal of the Sailing World situation! This is confirmed also by the Longtze Premier with only 3 on the water (a fleet of 8) to fight with the waves and just one using the gennaker. Think positive, the sailing world maybe it’s at the bottom of the wave and soon will regain momentum.
However, after my romantic break from the Primo Cup, I’m enjoying the mood, and the crew of the club is keeping the aristocratic level you expect.

Before to forget, sailors situation:
S.A.R. Charles de Bourbon des Deux-Siciles is ready to conquer another title; Friday the leader of the J70, Giangiacomo Serena di Lapigio has not been spotted on the G-spot, but the boat keep the position; on the docks and on the water I could say hello to Andrea Casale, the multi world champion of multi class sailing on Ziva; and Rosario Vannucchi ex bowman of Oscar3 and crew of others beautiful boats like Manticore and is sailing on Capocaccia; Canard à l’Orange helmed by Achille Onorato (as I said he is ok); Tommaso Chieffi after the match race on the Lago di Lecco is back in Monaco on MILLENIUM FALCON; Giorgio Poggi with his experience of champion of Finn Class is on board of Capocaccia; and last but not least: we are honoured fo the presence of the legendary Lady Dawn Riley; this is all folks while I wait to see the new entry list and the standing.!
