S.R.: DeepSeek: LPG2026 73° Giraglia - Conclusion – A race in ten points
S.R.: DeepSeek LPG 2026 73° Giraglia: Conclusion: THE LONG RACE, THE RETURN, THE NUMBERS, THE STORIES
Saint-Tropez, 17 June 2026 – Genoa, 20 June 2026
The dawn broke over Liguria, the waning crescent Moon's ashen glow still suspended in the pale sky, as the car—loaded with everything needed and that particular unease that precedes every departure—pulled away from Lake Lecco. Behind it remained the memory of grilled meat shared in Lierna, and the certainty that this was the right threshold from which to begin a journey that would turn into a regatta.
That stretch of water, watched over by the Grigna and the Resegone like two silent guardians, has witnessed many things over the centuries: fishermen, poets, and champions. World‑class champions sharpened their teeth on the Stars, boats built on these very shores, between the wind that rushes down from the mountains and the water that never betrays.
Then came Saint-Tropez: the race, the long one, the arrival in Genoa.
After that, the return slow, staged, almost ceremonial. The ice cream in front of V, marking the end of the regatta and the beginning of the journey home. Then Cannes with best friend, the beach below the Eden Rock, its light still holding the last warmth of the afternoon. And finally Cagnes-sur-Mer, where I stopped to help a colleague with his exhibition a the dinner with a beautiful piece of meat, as usual even though we sat down well after sunset, as one does on the coast. Later, stepping outside, a new moon, also silver, hung low over the hills.
And finally, the night drive, the Orobic dawn closing the circle, and yet another motorway closure in Genova — we are at +6 cursed years.
In between, a race.

The wind
Light, shifty, treacherous. The light wind had not spared the coastal races either: already in Saint-Tropez the fleet had to deal with lulls and waits, foreshadowing what would happen in the long race. The offshore start was played with 8 knots from the east, then came the lulls, the puffs, the nothing. The fleet stretched, closed, reopened like a bellows. The official distance was 207 miles, but ARCA SGR, on her actual route, sailed 222.27. The average speed of the fleet was 5.21 knots; the fastest was ARCA with 11.46 knots, the slowest OHANA with 4.32.
Line Honours podium
1. ARCA SGR – Furio Benussi – 1d 01:05:56
2. MAGIC CARPET E – Sir Lindsay Owen-Jones – +5'11"
3. MY SONG – Pier Luigi Loro Piana – +2h12'19"
The race was decided in a puff. Magic Carpet E had nearly 4 miles of lead, then a lack of wind changed everything. Ian Walker, on board Magic Carpet, recounted that the lead had been nearly four miles, before one less puff decided everything. On the ARCA SGR side, Furio Benussi explained that his boat performs best in light wind, while Magic Carpet becomes unbeatable above 8-10 knots.

The overall winner
Arkas Blue Moon, the Turkish TP52 owned by Bernard Arkas, won the Loro Piana Challenge Trophy. The blue dragon on her sails and hull supported them throughout the race. In 2025, she was leading at the Giraglia, then lost it. This year, she reversed the story: started further back, sailed better, and won. Trimmer Fikret Oral stated that he had dreamed of this moment for ten years, and coach Martin Watts emphasized how the victory was built step by step, with every tenth of a knot and every trim choice.
Class winners
- IRC 0: Cippa Lippa X (Guido Paolo Gamucci)
- IRC 1: Arkas Blue Moon (Bernard Arkas)
- IRC 2: Le Lupin (Jean Rameil)
- ORC overall: Crabx – Aquarama - Fraber (Roberto Bosio)
- ORC 1: QQ7 (Salvatore Costanzo)
- ORC 2: Scricca (Leonardo Servi, double-handed)
The inshore
The coastal races had already drawn the hierarchies. V won Maxi A with a minimal margin, Atalanta II won Maxi B with a perfect score (5 out of 5), Django WR beat Spirit of Lorina in IRC 1, Thetis won ORC 1, Flying Dolphin IRC 2, Fremito D'Arja ORC 2. ELO II, the Yacht Club Italiano youth project, finished fourth in ORC 1 with Tommaso Chieffi.
A handover worth more than many trophies.

The people of the Giraglia
- Paul Cayard, on MY SONG, defined by Pier Luigi Loro Piana as "the best".
- Torben Grael, on CAPRICORNO, with his daughter Martine on board – a living encyclopedia of the wind, with seven Olympic medals between them, and a career that stretched from the Star to SailGP, spanning every era of modern sailing.
- Ian Walker, on MAGIC CARPET E, tactician and afterguard. Two Olympic silver medals (Atlanta 1996, Sydney 2000), winner of the Volvo Ocean Race 2014-15 with Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing, and of the Velux 5 Oceans. On board Magic Carpet E, he recounted the puff that cost the victory, with the clarity of someone who has sailed every ocean.
- Tommaso Chieffi, on ELO II, passing the baton to the YCI youngsters.
- Furio Benussi, on ARCA SGR, with the five young sailors from the Nautical Institute of Trieste on board.
- Gabriele "Ganga" Bruni, on CIPPA LIPPA X – a sailor whose name carries weight in the offshore world, and whose presence on board added another layer of experience to Guido Paolo Gamucci's campaign.
- Karel Komarek, owner of V, Czech tycoon worth 10.3 billion dollars, who skipped the prize-giving – then apologized.
- Pier Luigi Loro Piana, who commented: "The Giraglia is a traditional regatta, very important in the Mediterranean. Every sailor wants to be here, but you always start with a little emotion because you never know what will happen. For Loro Piana, sailing is a way to interpret nature: the sea, the wind, the beauty of the world."
What they didn't tell you
Every regatta has an official face and a behind‑the‑scenes one. This is the second.
The race as a private luxury salon
The Loro Piana Giraglia is not just a race. It is also the most elegant of private luxury salons, where the title of "Title Sponsor" since 2024 has become a natural extension of the brand's identity. Pier Luigi Loro Piana, vice‑president of the maison, races in person on MY SONG. And the CEO of Loro Piana, Frédéric Arnault (son of Bernard Arnault), stated: "Loro Piana has always maintained an authentic and lasting bond with the world of sailing."
According to l'Opinion, sailing is for Loro Piana a "soft power": a laboratory to test fabrics and membranes, and a way to meet ultra‑high‑net‑worth clients in an authentic environment. The regatta becomes a testing ground for the maison's technical materials, which are tested in real conditions before becoming clothing.
The financial architecture of the Giraglia also reflects shifting tides in the macro‑world of major sports sponsorships. The departure of Rolex from this historic offshore classic coincides chronologically with a broader realignment of watchmaking brands within global sports circuits. In this context, the strong presence of the Loro Piana brand is felt, historically linked to the regatta and driven by the deep, genuine passion for sailing of its patron. The brand shapes the event by aiming for a high‑end, purely lifestyle image positioning, celebrating its historic nautical DNA through the concept of "quiet luxury"—perfectly embodied by the iconic white‑soled footwear designed to protect teak decks and lightweight outerwear. The objective is to embrace the entire dock through a shared experience: from the grand owners of the Maxi class to the vast fleet of sailors racing on production boats, all united by the same lifestyle and mutual respect for yachting traditions.
The numbers of the big players
- Karel Komarek (V) – estimated net worth 10.3 billion dollars (Forbes). In Saint‑Tropez he was seen little, and at V's prize‑giving he was not there. He later apologized, but the gesture remained.
- Sir Lindsay Owen‑Jones (Magic Carpet E) – former CEO of L'Oréal, one of the great collectors of maxis in the Mediterranean.
- Bernard Arkas (Arkas Blue Moon) – Turkish industrialist, owner with an eye for art. The blue dragon on the sails is his creation (source: interview with Bernard Arkas, Loro Piana Giraglia press release). "The dragon represents the strength and determination of our team", he stated.
Sailing gossip
- Komarek skips the prize‑giving – he justified it by saying he had a sudden commitment. He later sent a highly elegant letter of apology to the Yacht Club Italiano leadership.
- Carlo Cameli (YCI president) – Told as an example of "maritime coherence". Cameli commented: "The Giraglia is not just a race. It is a bridge between cultures, between generations, between passions."
- Jeremy Strong (actor, Succession) and Pierre Casiraghi joined forces on the same yacht, bringing a touch of Hollywood glamour and aristocracy to the foredeck.
- The atmosphere was vibrant right from Saint‑Tropez, where the Race Village chronicles recorded an epic consumption of gin during exclusive crew‑only parties.
An anecdote of pure seamanship
Balancing the sheer luxury of modern finance, the docks of Genova recalled the purest spirit of sailing through the memory of the late YCI President Cameli. Caught in a total glassout just 100 metres from the finish line during one of his historic campaigns, he categorically refused his crew's request to fire up the engine to end the agony. He chose instead to finish fourth in corrected time but completely out of the time limit, rather than compromise the rules and honour of traditional sportsmanship championed by the Yacht Club.

Technical analysis and Nostroma vs Reality comparison
The numbers say what the eyes saw. The official distance was 207 miles, but ARCA SGR sailed 222.27 on her actual route. The highest rating (MAGIC CARPET E, 1.944) was not enough to win, while the lowest (NUAGE II, 0.975) did not prevent finishing. The average speed of the fleet was 5.21 knots; the fastest, ARCA SGR, reached 11.46 knots, the slowest, OHANA, 4.32.
Physics said that boats with high ratings would suffer in light air. Reality confirmed it only in part: ARCA SGR won, and MAGIC CARPET E lost for a puff. The J/Boats (FREMITO D'ARJA, CHESTRESS, SALVORA) dominated their classes, as predicted.
From a purely statistical perspective, mathematical models credit Magic Carpet E with an exceptional theoretical over‑performance index, calculating a -28.3% deviation in corrected time compared to historic database benchmarks. However, this numerical analysis clashes head‑on with the intrinsic limitations of the IRC rating system and the real‑world experience of the sailors on the water. In the words of Furio Benussi himself, the discrepancy between rating coefficients and hull physics becomes crystal clear: in near‑zero wind conditions and ultra‑light air, ARCA SGR expresses an efficiency and ease of pace far superior to the hull lines of Magic Carpet E, which requires significantly more pressure to power its massive displacement. When the wind drops below a certain threshold, the IRC system struggles to quantify these dynamic variations, proving that the insight of the navigators on deck and a molecular knowledge of the vessel remain variables that no algorithm can fully predict.

The return
The Giraglia is not just a race. It is a journey that begins long before the start and ends long after the finish. This year it was like that: a dawn, a moon, a puff, a motorway closure. And the awareness that next year, it starts again.
(more to come...)
