LVST 2026 — Day 5 (02/10): The waiting game, and the Maxi-J Class review
Last update: 2 October 2026, 19:00
Note: The Classic results for 02/10 arrived late. Here they are, finally.
02/10 — A good morning starts well
The morning at Les Voiles is a ritual. Before the cannon, before the first start, there is the slow parade of crews heading to their boats. The pontoons wake up one by one.
And the dawn saw the salute of 3 hot air balloons passing by.
Today, on the docks, a proper gathering. Tommaso Chieffi. Simone Ferrarese and his father Roberto. The Piani family — Federico on Marilee (NY50), Mauro with his wife and Mauro Pelaschier. Giorgio Poggi, on Emilia Prima (I-2). Fabio Mazzoni, champion in various classes and former president of XV Zona FIV — another one from Lake Como. Ken Read, President of North Sails and North Technology Group, on PRIDE. And Loïck Peyron, always around, always with a story.
And for the first time, the Race Committee had someone from Lake Como.
A handshake here, a "how are you?" there. A good morning starts well.
Then the boats leave the port, one by one, and the ballet begins.
02/10 — The weather
The forecast was favourable, with variable skies. But the wind struggled to fill in, both for the Maxis and the Classics inside the bay. In the bay, the thermal breeze from a few cumulus clouds over the hilltops added to the mix. The morning was finally cool, but the day remained muggy and warm. The wind is shifty.
02/10 — The first arrivals
The first TP52s arrived around 15:10–15:14. FINAL FINAL (USA 60564) is the first. Later also PRIDE, a beautiful Nautor Swan restored a couple of years ago.
02/10 — The Classics start (from the field)
The start with the 12m was heart-stopping. France 1 and French Kiss in match-race mode before the start: they pushed to the committee boat early with France 1 engaged to leeward, they freed themselves from the early start, French Kiss managed to extricate herself and attacked. Then they bore away with incoming traffic. Somehow France 1 regained the engagement from leeward with port tack.
But stealthily Il Moro di Venezia started from deep in the pack and slipped into the group. Kiwi Magic did the same — she has technical problems, so much so that she is thinking of changing boats. Il Moro, on the other hand, managed the mast-setting problems.
Result after the start: French Kiss ahead of everyone from the committee boat, Il Moro engaging her from leeward with the boat heavily heeled. They headed for the bow of the Orient Express Corinthian. And unnoticed, Kiwi slipped into the game (she normally has a more favourable angle).
But French Kiss, despite winning the start, put Dambuster in the wind shadow, and she lost energy in her sails.
Probably at the apex that allows them to avoid the other megayacht Destiny, they all tacked towards the fort. But unlike all the others, French Kiss, Il Moro and Kiwi were tactically clever: they did not go too far inshore, and tacked back towards open sea. Kiwi in particular gained a lot in the crossing with the others.
France 1, while the others did the ballet described, remained behind — so far back she seemed stopped.
Meanwhile, as we waited, Shamrock V (JK3) appeared in all her majesty with her light sails — she is not racing, but she makes us mad with joy just to see her.
